Probably Anatolia, around 5000 BC
Steatite L. 2.9 cm
Calcareous concretions
Provenance: Private Parisian collection, before 2000.
This pendant depicts a bovine protome. Its advanced stylization, strong three-dimensionality, and the use of steatite link it to a pendant featuring a ram protome produced in Anatolia during the Middle Chalcolithic period, around 5000 BC (2004, When Orpheus Sang, cat. 2).
Our example also compares favorably with two other bovine protomes (2004, When Orpheus Sang, cat. 3 & 4), dated to the Halaf period (6th-5th millennia BC) and crafted between Mesopotamia and Northern Syria.
