Pair of candlesticks
(2) Bronze and sheet, cm H 42.5 x 22 x 13
Mark "JP" at the base
The pair of candlesticks presents three flames in bronze embossed and finely chiseled with decorations to volutes foliacee, vegetal motives, face of noble inside reserve and mascheroni. In the center are two statuettes (under the base is the trademark of the JP manufacture) depicting two young people dressed in country clothes, representing the theme of pastoral love, Also noted by the letter and dove held by the boy and addressed to his beloved. This theme was strongly appreciated by the aristocracy and the nascent bourgeoisie, as an idealization of love between characters from the bucolic environment. The artist’s attention is focused on the polychromy of porcelain, but not hesitating to contrast these bright tones with that of bronze, playing with the meticulous decoration made in chisel, which makes some surfaces appear more opaque. The light is thus reflected on the surfaces, creating an effect such that the eye can hardly stop on a particular, also thanks to the extreme attention to detail. The structure of the two objects is made of a sheet of bronze, which is raised and finely chiseled, so it can be assumed that among the more than eighty workers who worked in the Petit factory there were also some who specialized in casting and working with bronze.
