"17th Century Aubusson Tapestry "
Hand-woven wool and silk tapestry depicting Aeneas telling Dido about his adventures and the misfortunes of Troy from the series "The Story of Dido and Aeneas" after Virgil's Aeneid. This set was woven from drawings by the French painter Isaac Moillon (1614-1673). Moillon was one of the court painters of King Louis XIV and he painted many tapestry cartoons for the Royal Aubusson workshop, including a "Story of Dido and Aeneas" made up of nine pieces. Original borders. France, second half of the 17th century.
