Commissioned by Pope Leo X de Medici, this Madonna with a chair or Madonna della Seggiola, because of the chair post in the foreground, is one of Raphael's most famous works and undoubtedly the most copied by artists, especially those of the 19th century.
The canvas that we present here is an older copy, probably from the 18th century.
We find the relationship full of tenderness and humanity that Mary exudes as she holds the baby Jesus close to her.
"Humanity, holiness and grace", three qualifiers that apply to Mary characterize this work so famous and timeless. In our painting, compared to the original, the composition is simplified and refocused on the Virgin and Child, Mary's embroidered shawl has lost its motifs and the luxurious chair post in the original, evoking the seats reserved for dignitaries of the papal court, is here a simple turned wood.
This simplification of the details brings to the whole a human proximity that makes this Virgin and Child more accessible to us, closer to ordinary mortals.
Painting relined.
A quality old frame enhances the whole.
