This bedroom embodies the avant-garde vision of Francis Jourdain, a major figure in the Modern Movement and a pioneer of functional furniture. True to his committed approach, he designed sober, rational and accessible furniture, breaking with decorative academicism.
The whole is distinguished by clean lines, a modular design and the use of simple but robust materials, suitable for mass production. Each element favors utility, without superfluous ornament, in a resolutely progressive spirit.
This approach, innovative since 1913, demonstrates his desire to democratize decorative art by offering a functional and aesthetic living environment for all.

Francis Jourdain – Biography and Artistic
Journey Son of the architect Frantz Jourdain, Francis Jourdain evolved from a very young age in an artistic and intellectual environment that shaped his commitment. From 1891 to 1899, he became close to the Les Six group – Alexandre Charpentier, Jean Dampt, Charles Plumet, Henri Nocq, Félix Aubert and Tony Selmersheim – which advocated decoration based on the "truth of materials". This movement aimed to reconcile the social ideal of William Morris and the rationalism of Viollet-le-Duc, while going beyond their medieval references to arrive at a "useful art" inspired by the principles of Joseph Proudhon. The Groupe des Six thus announced the innovations of Auguste Perret and, from the Universal Exhibition of 1900, envisaged a "Modern Home", integrating the most recent techniques and a resolutely functional approach. However, their most notable achievement remains the decoration of the Villa Majorelle in Nancy (1901-1902), in which Francis Jourdain participated, still inscribing his work in the aesthetic of Art Nouveau before evolving towards a more refined and accessible design. With this room, Francis Jourdain fully illustrates his commitment to democratic, useful and rational furniture, announcing the evolution of design in the 20th century.
