Beautiful poem of four quatrains taken from the dramatic play Urbain Grandier in five acts by Alexandre Dumas, which he composed in collaboration with his accomplice Auguste Maquet. The play was performed at the Théâtre-Historique on March 30, 1850. Urbain Grandier is a free adaptation by Alexandre Dumas of the dramatic life of the eponymous priest of the small town of Loudun who was accused of acts of witchcraft and condemned to the stake by Richelieu. The poem here is located in the third scene, scene I, where the priest watches over Ursule's body. "Virgin, to whom the chalice of bitter liquor / Was so often offered, / Mother, who was called the sorrowful mother, / So much have you suffered! / You whose divine eyes, on the earth of men, / Have shed more tears, / Than your feet have since in the sky where we are, / Made flowers bloom .. / Vase of Election, morning star, / Mirror of purity, / You who pray for us with a virginal voice, / Supreme goodness; / In my turn today, blessed Mary, / I fall at your knees / Deign to listen to me, because it is I who pray to you / You who pray for us!.. / The virgin / Speak, because my ". The play Don Juan de Maraña or The Fall of an Angel by Alexandre Dumas was created in April 1836 at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint Martin. The exchanges between good and bad angels are in verse while the rest of the dialogues are in prose.
