Object description :

"Rosa Müller, Moel Siabod From The Llugwy River, Snowdonia, North Wales"
This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Rosa Müller (1822-1914) depicts the Moel Siabod mountain in Snowdonia, from the winding River Llugwy. Two children play on the riverbank.

Rosa Müller was predominantly known for her naturalistic landscape paintings depicting the upland scenery of North Wales and South West England. Hailing from Bristol, she was born into an artistic family. Her father, Nathan Cooper Branwhite (1775-1857), was a portraitist and both of her brothers became painters. In 1849, she also married an artist, Edmund Gustavus Muller (1816-1888). Her style, particularly her colouring, is comparable to her husband’s and the two probably worked closely together.

Her career seems to have flourished from around 1874 onwards when she was in her fifties. This coincides with her children reaching adulthood.

Numerous Victorian artists chose to paint along the River Llugwy including the great Benjamin Williams Leader RA (1831-1923).

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and Royal West of England Academy hold examples of her work.
