"Robert Dessales Quentin (1885-1988) "the Old Bridge In Limoges", Watercolor"
This watercolor on paper represents a view of the old Saint-Etienne bridge and the Saint-Etienne cathedral in Limoges; it is signed Robert Dessales Quentin (1885-1958) at the bottom left, dated 1933 and located on the back; we will note the presence of the label of the carrier Robinot Frères who transported this work to the Salon des Artistes Français in 1934. Robert Dessales-Quentin was born in 1885 in Brantôme in the Dordogne, a village nicknamed the Venice of Périgord. At the age of four, following inappropriate treatment, he permanently lost his hearing. His father, a notary in Brantôme, sent him to Paris where he continued his studies at the National Institute for the Deaf and Mute. During his schooling, he showed real aptitude for the graphic arts and naturally he entered the Julian Academy in the studio of JP Laurens in Paris. Back in Périgord, he became a renowned watercolourist and offered numerous works on Périgord and Limousin but also throughout the southwest, whether landscapes, but also views of castles, beautiful residences or churches which make the heritage of these regions famous. From 1909, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français of which he became a member in 1920 and even obtained an honorable mention at the 1928 Salon, which was an envied distinction for a watercolourist.
