"J. Van Der Goten (1659-1724) Dm Sani (1690-1773) - Sancho Panza (don Quixote Series)"
Taking advantage of the excellent contacts of his uncle Louis XIV, Philip V, newly installed on the throne of Spain, imitated the artistic centralism of Versailles by establishing in Madrid, in the French and Italian style, Academies of Fine Arts, Royal Manufactures and artistic workshops with painters, sculptors and master craftsmen imported from the main centres of Europe. For his manufacture of the Santa Barbara tapestries, Jacob Van der Goten, a famous master tapestry maker from Antwerp, was called to Madrid, and the series dedicated to Don Quixote, of which we present this magnificent fragment with Sancho Panza holding the shaving basin that serves as a helmet for Cervantes' hero, was the first commissioned by the king. The Montbaron Gallery offers its distinguished clientele a historic opportunity to acquire part of one of the main historical series of European tapestry art. - Dimensions: 158 x 104 cm with old frame. - Fair condition, with some damage and tears.
