Italo Balbo (born in Ferrara on June 6, 1896, died in Tobruk on June 28, 1940) was an Italian politician, soldier and aviator. He was Minister of Aeronautics and Governor of Italian Libya. On November 6, 1926, Italo Balbo was appointed Secretary of State for Aviation. He quickly reorganized the Royal Air Force (Regia Aeronautica) and learned to fly. On August 19, 1928, he became Marshal of the Air Force and on September 12, 1929, at only 33 years old, he became the youngest European Minister of Aviation. Balbo made two notable transatlantic flights. The first took place from December 17, 1930 to January 15, 1931, with fourteen Savoia-Marchetti S.55A seaplanes leaving from the Orbetello air base, near Rome, for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
