"Yena Cult Figure, Papua New Guinea, Tribal Art, Oceanic Art, Sculpture, Oceania"
Rare yena figure collected in the village of Nagri in Papua New Guinea. The yena figure is associated with the first ceremony organized to celebrate the yam harvest (cycle of three ceremonies in all), a sacred tuber venerated throughout Melanesia. This sculpture symbolizes the planting period and evokes the tuber as well as the digging stick used for its transplantation. These traditions are still strong in the Waskuk hills area.
