Robert Roskell was one of Liverpool’s most famous retailers and manufacturers of high-quality pocket watch movements made in England.
Roskell often worked closely with his own children and brother John.
He married Elizabeth Tarleton, daughter of watchmaker William Tarleton, circa 1795. His father-in-law was probably also his teacher.
In 1803, he and his brother John Roskell took over the business from William Tarleton. The company was established as Robert & John Roskell, 14 Church Street Liverpool and later as Messrs Roskell & Co, 12 & 14 Church Street, but both also supplied clocks under their own names.
Six children were born from his marriage to Elizabeth. Two sons, Nicholas Roskell and Robert Roskell Jr., became watchmakers.
In 1825, John Roskell left the company and Nicholas Roskell remained in business and became a business partner. Since then, the firm is called Robert Roskell & Son and has become the Maker of the Admiralty (Navy Watchmaker).
This partnership between father and son lasted until February 1832, when his second son, Robert Roskell Jr., joined the company.
This partnership lasted until the retirement of Robert Roskell on 30 December 1842.
Roskell clocks and chronometers are kept in several prestigious museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Powerhouse Museum, the Melbourne Museum-Museum Victoria and the National Maritime Museum & Royal Observatory.
