Title: LM de Noailles: deputy of the bailiwick of Nemours... drawn from life; engraved by Verité Author: Vérité, Jean-Baptiste (1756-1837). Engraver Publisher: In Paris, at the author's, In Bordeaux at Jogan rue du Chapeau Rouge Date of publication: 1790 Subject: Noailles, Louis-Marie de (1756-1804) Engraving from the revolutionary period. Philippe Louis Marc Antoine de Noailles (21 November 17521 – 15 February 1819), Duke of Poix, 1st Duke of Mouchy, was a royalist gentleman, captain of the king's guards, lieutenant general, deputy of the nobility at the Estates General of 1789. In 1789, he was elected deputy of the Nobility for the bailiwicks of Amiens and Ham at the Estates General of 1789. It was in the bailiwick of Amiens that his principality of Poix was located. He sat in this assembly with his brother, the Viscount of Noailles, deputy of the bailiwick of Nemours and brother-in-law of Lafayette, whose ideas were more advanced than his own. Elected 2nd out of 2 deputies on April 11, 1789, his notebook required voting by order, but he sat with the minority of the Chamber of Nobility and voted, at the first session, in favor of the verification of powers in common. He was in favor of the decrees of the night of August 4. On August 7, he supported three amendments by Clermont-Tonnerre on the abolition of captaincies and the release of prisoners for hunting offenses. On August 12, he opposed Gaillon's request to abolish the right of primogeniture. In September, he intervened to propose appointing six commissioners responsible for reporting on the reports relating to the Caisse d'escompte, submitted by several deputies to the President of the Assembly. He opposed Mirabeau's proposal to authorize the return to Corsica of exiled Paolists, fearing a revolt on the island. In January 1790, he opposed the abolition of stud farms. Unlike the other deputies of the nobility of Picardy, he was in favor of moderate reforms. He resigned from his duties as deputy on May 9, 1790 and was not replaced, his substitute, the Count of Gomer, not sitting. Attached to the King, he defended the door of the royal carriage on July 17, 1789. During the sessions of the Chamber of Nobility, he had a quarrel with the Count of Lambertye. The two fought a duel and he wounded his opponent. Commander-General of the Bourgeois Guard of VersaillesNote 1 the Prince of Poix preferred to resign, before the October Days, due to the indiscipline of the guards. The Prince de Poix left for Koblenz, but he was poorly received by some émigrés, because of his links with Louis XVI and La Fayette, who was his brother's brother-in-law. He therefore returned to France to defend the royal family and fought on 10 August 1792 at the Tuileries. He protected the King when he went from the Tuileries Palace to the National Assembly. He remained in an antechamber, with other servants loyal to the King and attentive to his misfortune. The King had to order them to leave several times. After 10 August 1792, he hid for a few weeks, before heading to England. He thus escaped the fate of his parents, who were guillotined in 1794. Contemporary frame in oil-gilded wood.
