Porcelain vase with lid and gilt bronze mount. Probably from the French factory of Edme Samson. Hand-painted with famille verte decoration, it depicts a pair of Chinese fenghuang phoenixes surrounded by vegetation and birds. In the Far East, the phoenix is a symbol of virtue and grace, and also symbolises the combination of yin and yang. It appears in times of peace and happiness and hides when danger approaches.
