"Tray - Basket With Figures, Various Metals, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912). "
Tray - Japanese basket made of various metals: brass, copper, silver, with gilding. It shows figures of Buddhist monks - probably Rakans (Arhats) - and a child pulling a cart. Around the figures, we see a landscape with hand-engraved decorations showing, among other things, a cherry blossom or lotus flowers. The Rakans are the first disciples of the historical Buddha, who followed the noble eightfold path and reached the four stages of enlightenment. Their mission is to protect the Buddhist faith and to await on earth the coming of Maitreya, the enlightened Buddha who was to come to earth several millennia after the death of Gautama Buddha.
