"Princes Bisbescu, Princes Of Wallachia, Two Terrines In Solid Silver, Vienna 1846, Klinkosch"
Very rare pair of two solid silver terrines with the arms of the princes Bibescu, reigning princes of Wallachia, made in 1846 in Vienna by the goldsmiths Mayerhofer & Klinkosch. One of the terrines still has its lid, the other no longer has one. The princes Bibescu are a family of Romanian boyars or nobles, originally from Wallachia, a principality under Ottoman protectorate from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century. The hospodar or reigning prince is elected by the representatives of the nobility. The date of manufacture 1846 and the coat of arms applied to the terrines point to two brothers Gheorghe and Barbù Bibescu who succeeded each other as reigning prince of this principality which is at the origin of the kingdom of Romania. Their female descendants allied themselves with the family of the princes of Caraman-Chimay and the family of the dukes of Noailles.
