Pierre-Gaston RIGAUD (Saint-Morillon 1874 - Paris 1939) "Vase of flowers" Oil on panel signed lower left and dated 1922 Dimensions: 37 x 46 cm Pierre-Gaston Rigaud (1874 – 1939) is a French post-impressionist painter. After being a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, he was a student at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1895 (Atelier Bonnat, Gustave Moreau and Albert Maignan). Rigaud became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1906. After this appointment, he became a key figure in the Salon exhibitions and began to exhibit with the Indépendants. Rigaud was invited to a national exhibition with the Salons d'Automne des Tuileries in 1920 where he received a silver medal. In 1923, Rigaud received a gold medal. After having painted landscapes (Basque Country, Corsica, Arcachon Bay), and some rarer floral compositions, he devoted himself almost exclusively to cathedrals and their stained glass windows. This is how he became known as the "man of the cathedrals". Pierre Gaston Rigaud devoted his entire life to the realization and development of his unique style. He also became very active and involved in the artistic society in Paris. He was a teacher who spent a lot of energy helping young artists realize their career dreams. He and Henri de Toulouse-Lautec shared a studio in Paris to help each other through difficult times. The museums of Nantes, Angoulême, Troyes and Mulhouse have works by Pierre-Gaston Rigaud. He is the father of Jean Rigaud (1912 – 1999), official painter of the Navy.
