Mathurin Moreau (1822 - 1912) is a French sculptor born in Paris. His creations strongly marked the end of the 19th century at the heart of the Napoleon III style. He is famous for his decorative creations, from fountains to monumental sculptures to quality pieces for collectors. He shapes and marks his time in the history of the decoration of French cities. Here, we present a pair of rare torches by the quality of production as well as for the model. Each torch represents a caryatid overhanging a black marble base, encircled by a painting of bronze characters. Typical of Greek history and imagination, this pair of caryatids carries the light on the shoulder by the capital of the torch. In keeping with a classical decoration, with dreamlike universes, this pair draped in the antique style perfectly illustrates the desire to highlight the elements of ancient classicism on the agenda during the periods of the French empire, here Napoleon III.
