Object description :

"Sea Monster Ray Jenny Hanniver "
Jenny Haniver ghost or friendly face… A figure of terror in the world of 18th century marine superstitions. We could discuss what kind of ray it is, but we would have to count the vertebrae and venture into scientific meanders… That is not my goal, I prefer to dream and make this “dragon fish” speak. The features of a smiling face remind me of a certain captivating face, like the one that seduced sailors of centuries past. They would have damned themselves for its song… A mermaid made from a ray from Southeast Asia, most often Raja Cavata. “The Jenny Haniver is a ray cut and dried in such a way that it resembles a small sea monster. It was traditionally the sailors of Antwerp who made and sold these little creatures to onlookers. Jenny Haniver's name comes from the word Genius of Antwerp, a term mispronounced by foreign sailors who distorted her name. Every self-respecting cabinet of curiosities must have one.
