Rodolphe CAILLAUX (1904 – 1989) “Boats in the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz” Oil on canvas signed lower middle, titled on the back H: 38.5 cm x 46,5 cm Rodolphe Caillaux is the representative of a figurative expressionism of the 1950s. He is famous for his bouquets of flowers and his landscapes with sustained lines and accentuated forms, his lively palette and his thick layers of oil paint spread with a knife or trowel. Familiar with the Basque Country which he often painted, he also created the Maurice Ravel medal for the Monnaie de Paris. A street bears his name in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. A large painting by Rodolphe Caillaux “the Basque dancers” is exhibited at the Basque and History Museum of Bayonne.
