Gilded and polychrome wooden altar element representing the Virgin in profile
Gilded and polychrome wood
Spain 17th century
Dimensions: H. 27 x W. 26 cm
Condition report: freshness of the gilding, woodworm holes, part of the frame is missing
This virgin, represented in profile, is wearing a shroud. The background is matted and highlighted with branches. The flesh tone is still partially present as is the color of the hair. The gilding is cleaned and still very present. By the presence of grooves on the sides, this suggests a tongue surround typical of 17th century cabinetmaking assemblies.
This is a rare example of liturgical sculpture in the heart of the very harsh Spanish counter-reformation movement. Similar examples allow this location (see Laurence Fligny).
