Charles Ogier : “basque Village”

Charles OGIER (1856-1897): "Village au Pays Basque" (Village in the Basque Country), watercolor 21 X 15.5 cm, mounted in a gilded frame 39 X 32 cm (small accidents) by a marie-louise with gilded bevel. Very fresh, this watercolor shows us a street, animated by a woman and her little girl and plunging between the houses towards the bay below, a mountain in the background. I have not located the place, it could be in the southern Basque Country. One of the greatest challenges, but also one of the greatest satisfactions of our profession as art dealers is to rediscover a forgotten painter but whose talent is indisputable and to put him back on the front of the stage for the greatest joy of amateurs. This is the case of Charles OGIER, whose works seem to date from the beginning of the 20th century so much do they reveal modernity. He was often exhibited successfully at the famous "Galeries Georges Petit" where he was also sold in 1898 after his premature death at the age of 41. The catalogue of the latter, prefaced by Luc-Olivier Merson, tells us the places where he preferred to stay and paint: Banks of the Loire, Pyrenees, Provence, Spain, but especially the Basque Country where he created some of his masterpieces.
