He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Maxmilián Pirner (1894-1900). On a scholarship from Josef Hlávka, he went to Italy in 1902 and to Paris with Hugo Boettinger in 1903. He stayed in Paris from 1904 to 1914 and became a member of the Society of Colour Engraving from 1906. From 1910 he was a member of the Royal Society of Painters in London. In 1917 he was a co-founder of the Hollar Association of Czech Artists and Graphic Designers and a member of its board of directors. From 1898 to 1942 he was a member of the SVU Mánes, becoming its president in 1919.[3] During his stay in Paris he travelled to Spain, England and Morocco and toured the world in 1926–27. In 1928 he became a professor of the new graphic arts speciality at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.[4][5] He published articles, particularly on graphic art, in the journal Hollar and published several professional guides for graphic designers.
