James Havard Thomas, born in Bristol in 1854 into a Welsh family, is one of the most important British sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1881 and 1884, he was a student of Jules Cavalier at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1883 to 1885. This head of a young black man was made in 1884 while Thomas was living in Paris.
