Object description :

"Statue Christ In The Round – Jesus Christ In Suffering Sculpted, Corpus Christi - Baroque"
Late 17th century France This remarkable sculpture in the round represents Christ on the cross, treated with striking expressiveness. His inclined face, half-closed eyes and half-open mouth convey a moment of suffering and abandonment, characteristic of representations of Christ at the end of his agony on the cross. His finely sculpted torso, with slightly prominent ribs and subtly sketched muscles, accentuates the dramatic and spiritual dimension of the work. Made with great attention to detail, this Corpus Christi illustrates the influence of the late Baroque, visible in the dynamic treatment of the perizonium tied at the side, whose animated folds give the sculpture a feeling of movement and lightness. The expression of the face and the delicacy of the hair recall the work of French workshops at the end of the 17th century, where sculptors strove to transcribe the suffering of Christ with striking realism. A refined example of 17th-century French sacred art At this time, religious sculpture in France was strongly influenced by the Italian and Spanish schools, which favoured emotion and dramatic intensity in representations of Christ. The Corpus Christi were then widely distributed in churches, convents and private oratories, serving as supports for devotion and meditation on the Passion. The treatment of the perizonium, particularly careful in this work, demonstrates refined know-how, with chiseled folds and twisting effects that add to the realism of the scene. The crown of thorns and the hair are also finely detailed, highlighting accomplished technical mastery. Condition: The sculpture has a beautiful old patina, reinforcing its authentic character. Some natural cracks related to the age of the material are visible, without altering the solidity of the work. The arms were sculpted separately and assembled using the traditional technique. Slight lack to the fingers and one toe. Dimensions: • Height (foot to hand): 26 cm • Width (hand to hand): 15.5 cm Delivery: Fast and secure shipping via DHL Express, ensuring that this unique and characterful piece arrives in optimal condition.
