The Hounds of the New Townberry Hunt, 19th Century by JOHN EMMS (1843-1912) A large 19th century portrait of the New Townberry Hounds, oil on panel by John Emms. An excellent quality and good condition study of the New Townberry Hounds resting in their kennels. A superb example of Emms' painting depicting the pack at rest probably in the New Forest area where Emms was frequently commissioned to paint. Presented in its gilt frame. Signed, Provenance: A private British collector Dimensions: 20" x 15" framed approximately Artist Biography John Emms worked as an assistant to Frederic Leighton in London before setting up his own studio. In 1888 he moved to Lyndhurst in the New Forest where he specialised in hunting scenes and dog portraits. He exhibited frequently in London from 1866 to 1889, including at the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Gallery. He was a member of the Southampton Art Society.
