Clipper Off The Coast, St Ives, 19th Century by Albert Julius Olsson RBA ROI RWA RBC RA, British (1864–1942) at $45,000 A large 19th century view of a lone clipper off the coast of St Ives, oil on canvas by Julius Olsson. Excellent quality and condition, an example of the work of the St Ives and Coast painters. Signed, labelled on the reverse and presented in its original gilt frame. Dimensions: 25" x 21.5" framed approx. Biography Julius Olsson worked in the trade for four years before turning to painting, without any formal training. He travelled, particularly by sea, collecting numerous studies. In 1890 he settled in St Ives. He began exhibiting in London in 1888 and from 1892 became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Paris Salon: in 1900 he received an honourable mention at the Universal Exhibition and in 1903 a third-class medal. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Primarily a marine painter, he was particularly fond of sunsets and moonlight.
