MACCAGNANI, Eugenio
Born in Lecce on April 4, 1852, died in Rome on March 19, 1930. He studied sculpture in Rome, at the Accademia di S. Luca, and made his debut in 1880 with the group of gladiators, later refining his skills as a classic and robust modeler and revealing himself to be a perfect expert in anatomy. His main works in Rome: the colossal statue of St. Thomas (private property), the Transport of the body of St. Cyril (S. Lorenzo), two decorative statues (both depicting Fame) for the Palace of Justice, the monuments to Seismit Doda and to the fallen of the Engineers, the tasteful plastic ornaments and the war statues for the monument to Vittorio Emanuele; in Brescia: monument to Garibaldi; in Loreto: various sculptures for the basilica; in Buenos Aires: equestrian monument to Garibaldi. He also enjoyed a good reputation as a modeller of small statues (Arab on a camel, Bacchante, Pompeiana (Museum of Lecce), How cold it is (Gallery of Modern Art in Rome). Müller Prize, 1907 (Player, Gallery of the Academy of S. Luca in Rome) and large gold medal in Paris (group Adam and Eve, 1900). He was an academician of S. Luca and of the Virtuosi del Pantheon.
