He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Jan Preisler, Vlaho Bukovac, Jakub Obrovský and in the graphic specialty with Max Švabinský. In 1924, he founded the Ho Ho Ko Ko group, also called the Social Painting Group, together with Karel Holan, Pravoslav Kotík and sculptor Karel Kotrba.
Holý devoted himself to lithography and etching on the theme of the life of ordinary people, which he continued to do during his membership in the Umělecká beseda (1920-1924) and the Ho-Ho-Ko-Ko Social Group (1925-1927), named after the surnames of its members - Holý, painters Karel Holan, Pravoslav Kotík and sculptor Karel Kotrba. The work of this group is among the most striking manifestations of Czech realism of the 1920s. It is an analogue of the new objectivity in Germany or neoclassicism in France and Italy. The group exhibited annually in Prague and Brno. Its pictorial work consists mainly of landscapes. Stylistically, it is characterized by a constant inclination towards expressionism. In the 1920s he was a colorist, later he created dynamic, impasto landscapes. He was often inspired by the landscape of the Podorlicko region. Like Karel Holan, he liked to paint scenes from the outskirts, but he was also an excellent and distinctive landscape painter.
