Gorgonians are Cnidarians, like corals, are sessile colonial polyps (attached to a substrate, each "fan" corresponds to a colony of small polyps), living in tropical and subtropical seas. Like corals, gorgonian polyps do not need sunlight to grow. Which means that, despite their "fan" appearance, they are marine aquatic animals. They feed on plankton. This branch includes corals, anemones and jellyfish. Cnidarians have been strongly represented in the fossil record for over 500 million years (Cambrian, even the Ediacara fauna).
