Sea Gorgon On Turned Wooden Base
Pretty brown-coloured gorgonian with a strong rounded hollow foot.
Presented on a black turned wooden base.
Dimensions:
Total height (with base): 26 cm
Height of the gorgonian alone: approximately 21 cm.
Former naturalist collection. Odourless.
The gorgonian is mounted on a telescopic rod that fits into the base.
Gorgonians are Cnidarians, like corals, are sessile colonial polyps (attached to a substrate, each "fan" corresponds to a colony of small polyps), living in tropical and subtropical seas. Like corals, gorgonian polyps do not need sunlight to grow. Which means that, despite their "fan" appearance, they are marine aquatic animals. They feed on plankton. This branch includes corals, anemones and jellyfish. Cnidarians have been strongly represented in the fossil record for over 500 million years (Cambrian, even the Ediacara fauna). (The apple serves as a volumetric scale for the photograph)
