"Fritz" A French Shepherd Dog, dated 1897, Paris René-Xavier Prinet (1861-1946) sold for $105,000 19th century portrait of a French Shepherd Dog, oil on panel by René-Xavier Prinet. Head portrait of a French Shepherd Dog, signed and dated, Paris 1897, in excellent condition and quality. Presented in its original gilt frame. Dimensions: 39 x 30 cm approximately framed Artist Biography René Prinet studied with Gérome, Courtois and Dagnan-Bouveret and, with Albert Besnard, Aman-Jean and Bourdelle, established the Salon des Tuileries in Paris. He taught many students at the Académie Libre which he directed in Montparnasse, and then at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts where he was in charge of the women's studio. He is known for his interiors and portraits, notably the Saglio family. He is also a painter of history and religion, leaving an Adoration of the Magi in the church of Saint-Férieux in Besançon. He is also responsible for the Petit Quadrille in the library of the Opera, the Four Seasons of the Palace of the Legion of Honor and decorations for the Museum of Modern Art. He illustrated Balzac, Pierre Loti and Anatole France, and wrote Initiation à la peinture, but did not manage to complete his in-depth study of the Écrits de peintres. His wit and verve earned him a special place in Parisian society. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and received numerous artistic distinctions, and was an officer and grand cross of the Legion of Honor. He exhibited from 1885 at the Salon des Artistes Français, from 1890 at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, then at the Salon des Tuileries. A retrospective of his work was organized in 1986 at the Musée Bourdelle in Paris.
