Splendid Flemish painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on panel artwork of excellent pictorial quality depicting a mythological subject of great charm, Bacchus and Ariadne. The princess of Crete had been abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos after helping him escape from the labyrinth of the Minotaur. Dionysus, god of ecstasy and wine, will come to the rescue of Ariadne and will marry the beautiful princess in the presence of the Gods. In our composition the protagonists exchange an intense look; while Dionysus embraces Ariadne she holds a parrot in her left hand, a symbol of marital fidelity but also of lust depending on the context. Painting already restored with the application of a resistant parquet on the back (see photo) and the resumption of color in small points. Scenic 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood with floral and fruit motifs, with some signs of aging. Painting overall in good state of conservation. Internal size H 57 x W 42 cm.
