Thanks to the interest of the architect Rodolfo Vantini, he began attending the School of Ornament and Architecture in Rezzato (BS) in 1839. In 1845, the young Lombardi moved to Milan where he attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the studio of the sculptor Lorenzo Vela, older brother of the better-known Vincenzo Vela. In 1852 Lombardi, through the intervention of Countess Marietta Mazzuchelli Longo, moved permanently to Rome where he continued his studies at the Accademia di San Luca and with the sculptor Pietro Tenerani. In 1872 his 29-year-old wife Emilia Filonardi died, leaving their six-year-old son Adolfo. In 1878, seriously ill, he moved with his son Adolfo to Brescia. He died in his home in Brescia on 9 March 1880.
