Gouache on paper applied to canvas.
117x70.5 cm with frame, signed “noël” lower left.
The painting depicts a marine scene on a stormy night: Noel beautifully expresses the dramatic atmosphere of the storm with the detailed rendering of the sea waves, the sailboats and boats struggling forward and the realistic rendering of the sky given by the modular bluish-gray tones.
Alexandre Jean Noel was a highly appreciated artist for his numerous gouaches and watercolors of seascapes and landscapes. Aged only sixteen, young Noel distinguished himself by his talent in drawing by participating in an expedition to Baja California to observe the transit of Venus, for which he served as an illustrator and documenter of the local fauna and local habits and customs; some of the drawings will be purchased by the Royal Academy, today kept at the Louvre Museum. The artist frequently exhibited his rich production of landscapes, seascapes and city views at the Paris Salon; Pairs of his gouaches with marine subjects are in the Louvre Museum.
