Diameter: 48.5 cm.
Galvanotype of high definition quality and a beautiful decorative presence from the end of the 19th century obtained from a pewter edition from the beginning of the 17th century that the typology of the punches, not listed by Erwin Hintze, allows to probably situate in northern Germany
It is provided on the reverse with a fully covering brass shell.
Hallmarking:
1°- in the medallion of Alexandrus a city mark and a master's punch, unidentified
2°- in the medallion of Ninus, the master's mark mentioned in 1°.
History:
Caspar ENDERLEIN medalist and founder settled in NUREMBERG around 1584 and specialized in the engraving of molds around 1610. He was largely inspired by François BRIOT, some of whose models he took up and interpreted. The paternity of this Mars basin was first attributed to him by historians and specialists, then to BRIOT, later, by others. In any case, this is one of the major works of this "Edelzinn" production of the Renaissance which was published at the time and later by other founders including the one mentioned on the present basin.
The vintage pewter prints that appeared on the market in recent decades have been negotiated between 3 and 5000€
Conservation condition:
In very good condition, the reliefs do not show any wear preventing their precise reading, two areas of limestone concretion are indicated on the edge of the reverse.
