Object description :

"Two-body Trumeau In Lacquered, Gilded And Painted Wood. Venice, First Half Of The 18th Century."
Two-body trumeau in lacquered, gilded and painted wood. Venice, first half of the 18th century.

105 x 54 cm x h 245 cm.

Entirely in finely lacquered and gilded wood with “a Chinoiseries” motifs. Wavy front and elegantly carved cymatium. Interiors entirely in lacquered and painted wood simulating tortoiseshell.

Introduced in 18th-century Venice, the trumeau, a two-body piece of furniture, represents an era of sophisticated elegance and refinement. Characterized by sinuous lines and sumptuous decorations, these pieces of furniture embody the union between the mastery of Venetian cabinetmakers and oriental influences, in particular the fashion for chinoiserie. The decorations a Chinoiseries, inspired by Chinese and Japanese design, revolutionized the furniture market of the time, conferring an aura of exoticism and charm to the furnishings of 18th-century Venetian palaces. These pieces of furniture were not only functional, but also works of art that reflected the cosmopolitan spirit and the search for new aesthetics of the time.

The piece of furniture in question is a two-body trumeau made in Venice around the 1740s and 1750s, particularly prized for its exceptional black-background lacquering with gold leaf decorations featuring typical Chinoiseries motifs. The lower part consists of a front with three shaped drawers and a drop-down drawer concealing a series of small drawers and secret compartments. The upper part with two mirrored doors opens onto a series of compartments and shelves used to hold porcelain and documents. The final touch is given by the stunning cymatium, also decorated in the style of the piece of furniture, but embellished with a very refined carving that competes with the best gilded mirrors of the time. A further touch of exoticism is given by the interior of the piece of furniture, entirely lacquered and painted to simulate tortoiseshell, an extremely rare and unusual detail.
