Pewter shouldered PITCHER with oblique plinth foot, straight heel cup and S-shaped thumb with molded crest and creeping tongue.
Incompletely legible control mark with crowned C.
Beautiful mark of Louis CLERET received master before 1756: crowned hammer / LC / E. (LC are the initials of the master, and E that of the city) Countermark on the inside bottom to the measure of Saint-Denis: St D. This gauge was in force in Paris and in certain centers of the greater Paris region. This is the PINTE measuring 1.45 liters. The largest gauge was therefore the POT with a capacity of 2.90 liters.
Let us recall here that before the introduction of the Metric System, each city had its own gauge and that for example the PINTE of one was not the same as the PINTE of the other, and often as close as they were. On the other hand, there was a common rule: We went from one gauge to the one immediately above by doubling the capacity.
Height: 27.7 cm.
ETAMPES, Third quarter of the 18th century
Exceptional example of perfectly Parisian typology, absolutely superb in quality and condition, of which we only very rarely find witnesses of the production....This is the sixth example noted in nearly fifty years of "frequentation" of old pewter. Bibliography: "Les jugs d'étain" by Charles Boucaud "La poterie d'étain en France" by Roger Verdier Let us recall in passing that these jugs were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime and that they occupy a central place in the archaeology of tin and the regulations and customs relating to gauging
