This Second Empire period headdress was modified by regulation in 1872 after the fall of Napoleon III: the imperial eagle was then replaced by the coat of arms of Paris on the front of the helmet.
This model was worn for only four years from 1872 to 1876, date of the adoption of a new model with smaller dimensions.
It is complete with its interior leather liner.
Helmet, visor and neck cover in steel.
Brass headband decorated with the coat of arms of Paris with the words "Garde de Paris" and the motto "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" meaning "it is beaten by the waves but does not sink".
Brass chinstraps with rosettes in the shape of a radiant sun.
High crest decorated with gadroons and laurel leaves which is topped with a brass marmoset and a tuft of black horsehair.
Long original black mane still well furnished and measuring 60 cm.
Beautiful scarlet non-commissioned officer "plumet" made of rooster tail feathers and measuring 27 cm high. This "plumet" is regulation but more recent than the helmet.
Total height of the helmet 36 cm.
Superb collector's item in very good general condition which has not been polished and presents today a beautiful old patina. Very decorative.
