"A Damask Lampas Striped Satin Background Alcove Bedspread - Louis XVI Period Circa 1780"
Circa 1780 France An alcove bedspread in damask lampas with a satin background and wide cherry red and indigo stripes, typical of French production (Lyon?) from the end of the 18th century. Several assembled strips of 53 cm wide, make up this bedspread whose bolster covers are made in another parma and gold yellow damask lampas representing vine leaves laden with bunches of grapes (a tribute to Bacchus?). Clever twill weave decoration including "lace" on a red background and sinuous branches on an indigo blue background striped with green. The large stripes are separated by fine shaded red and yellow stripes. The slopes and seams are highlighted with gold yellow taffeta ribbon. Piece entirely lined with unbleached linen from the same period. Piece unmodified since the 18th century with remarkable freshness. No defects. Very good condition of color and conservation. Overall dimensions: 184 cm x 188 cm. Bed tray 111 cm x 140 cm. Slope folded down: 63 cm x 140 cm.
