"Louis Suire (1899-1987) Pierre Loti's House On The Island Of Oléron. Ile De Ré, La Rochelle, Enard"
Beautiful watercolor by Louis Suire representing a view of the house of Pierre Loti's grandparents in Saint Pierre d'Oléron around 1935/40, located at the bottom left + signed at the bottom right. Size of the watercolor without frame 23x31cm and 37x46cm including frame. This is a pretty and quite watercolor by Louis Suire representing the famous house of Pierre Loti on the island of Oléron, in fact Suire was a few unfaithful to his favorite island, the island of Ré, and most of the time he came to Oléron in Saint-Pierre and never failed to sketch the house of the famous writer, he will make several views of this house, here he paints it from the inside from the courtyard, the street passes just behind the 2 entrances that we can see. Watercolor is one of the painter's favorite techniques, he masters it perfectly as we can see here. Two other great watercolorists will paint this famous house many times, they are Ernest and Louis Lessieux, the 2 most famous painters of Oléron (go see 2 works for sale in my other ads) Louis Suire, born October 29, 1899 in Cognac and died January 18, 1987 in Lagord, is a French painter and publisher. A child from La Rochelle from a bourgeois family, Louis Suire was able to take drawing lessons early on under Louis Giraudeau. It is also thanks to the latter that he discovered in 1912 an Île de Ré still wild and very secluded. Immediately fallen under its spell, he decided to acquire a house there one day. His talent allowed the artist to enter the Beaux-Arts in Paris. This is the time when he attended the Académie Julian, became friends with Paul Signac, Albert Marquet and André Dunoyer de Segonzac. After a short intermezzo forced by the First World War, he was able to return to La Rochelle where he quickly married, in 1923, his wife Hélène - his love since the age of 14. A year later their son Claude was born. Another five years later, in 1929, the Suire couple bought a house on the Île de Ré, in the village of Les Portes-en-Ré more precisely in La Rivière. This house subsequently became the studio of the son and grandson of Louis Suire to name these two artists: Claude Suire and Olivier Suire-Verley. Still living in La Rochelle and having a pied-à-terre on the island, the Suire family, first as a couple and then with their son Claude, made many trips to the island serving as inspiration for the painter's abundant work. A brilliant jack-of-all-trades, Suire became a publisher by creating the publishing house La Rose des Vents mainly dedicated to regionalism illustrated by his own hands. The Second World War hit his life harder and earned him two years of imprisonment in a labor camp in Germany. But he returned to his territory to continue his artistic work as well as his life as a Rochelais, Rhétais but especially as a husband and father. Louis Suire died in 1987, the same year as his wife Hélène.
