A painter of urban landscapes and watercolorist, Stein sketched sites in Paris and London with a talent of great spontaneity. This chronicler and illustrator was able to accurately describe the thousand aspects of Parisian life at the end of the 19th century. Georges Stein knows how to perfectly transcribe the atmosphere, elegance and cheerfulness of the Belle Epoque.
He regularly exhibits his works at the Paris Salon on the Champs-Elysées. He also produced large decorative panels, notably a series of works decorating the casino in the town of Vichy.
Painter of Parisian city life, he also focuses on the animation of other cities including Berne, Monte Carlo and London, of which he leaves us some views. But above all, it was the famous squares of Paris that captured his attention throughout his career: La Madeleine, the Ile de la Cité, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Opera and the Moulin Rouge. Its emblematic views are a true testimony to the morals and leisure activities of the Parisian public.
Very influenced by the Parisian views of Jean Beraud, Georges Stein, with his rapid style, emphasizes in this painting the muted luminosity of a stormy afternoon. He accentuates the effect of movement by the position of the women who pass each other in the street, one wearing a hat and umbrella. Its lively scenes give spectators the impression of having participated in the animation and hustle and bustle of the streets.
