"From The Comédie Française To The Boulevards. 1906"
amusing gallery of portraits of actors and authors, sketched by Charles Granval or Grandval, prefaced by Jules Claretie of the French Academy and published by the literary and artistic publishing company in 1906. Charles Granval (1882-1943) joined the Comédie Française in 1904, and became its 264th member in 1922. He also pursued a career as a painter, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. He used his graphic talents in the theater, becoming a director and costume designer. He had a brilliant career in cinema, both with silent and talking films. He notably worked under the direction of Julien Duvivier, in La Bandera or Pépé le Moko. The book presented here bears witness to the schoolboy spirit that reigns in the troops, even official ones, and presents a gallery of faces of actors, authors and gossip writers of the time. We come across Lucien Guitry, the beautiful Otero, or Edmond Rostand. Initially published in paperback, it is covered with a pretty half binding in brown shagreen, struck with typical early century stamps. The binding is signed and remains in excellent condition,
