Object description :

"Empire Clock With Cherubs, Gilt Bronze, Ca. 1800-1820"
A refined and decorative Empire mantel clock in gilt bronze, made in the early 19th century. The design embodies the neoclassical aesthetic of the Empire period, characterized by symmetrical compositions, mythological motifs and luxurious materials. The clock is supported by two winged cherubs holding a lyre-shaped frame, seamlessly integrating the clock face. The enamel dial features Roman numerals and elegantly shaped hands. The movement is a classic French eight-day mechanism with half-hour and full-hour chimes. The rectangular base is richly decorated with finely chiseled reliefs depicting classical scenes, including playful putti, floral elements and ornaments inspired by antiquity. The tapered feet enhance both refinement and stability. With dimensions of 28 x 31 x 11 cm, this mantel clock is an elegant yet compact decorative piece. Highly prized by the French aristocracy, it served as both a timepiece and a status symbol. The combination of gilded bronze, mythological references and exquisite craftsmanship makes it an exceptional example of Empire-era decorative art.
