In 1902–1904 he studied at the School of Applied Arts (prof. Emanuel Dítě, Emanuel Krescenc Liška) and in 1904–1907 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (prof. Vlaho Bukovac, Rudolf Otto von Ottenfeld). During his studies he undertook study trips to Dresden, Berlin, Munich and Paris. He became acquainted with the works of Matisse, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and after his return he was also inspired by Bohumil Kubišta, with whom he shared a studio. In 1913 he founded a private painting school in Prague together with Otakar Nejedlý.
Together with Nejedlý he painted the French battlefields of World War I. In the 1920s and 1930s he undertook a number of trips abroad (Italy, Dalmatia, Paris) and painted landscapes in various places in Bohemia.
In the years 1909–1911 and 1917–1949 he was a member of the Mánes Association of Fine Artists,[3] from 1923 a member of the curatorial board of the Modern Gallery in Prague, and in 1933 he was admitted to the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts. He was an active member of the Eighth and the Group of Fine Artists.
