"Pair Of Vases - Candelabras In Gilt Bronze And Celadon Porcelain From The Napoleon III Period"
Elegant Pair of Porcelain Ornamental Vases mounted as Candelabras decorated on a Celadon and pink background with undulating acanthus foliage scrolls, flowerlets and floral branches and pearl rosaries enhanced with gold. Finely chiseled with volutes, scrolls, stems, seeds and acanthus buds, a gilded bronze mount in Louis XVI finery encases the porcelain piece topped around a central shaft forming a torch of a bouquet with four profiled "arabesque" light arms with beautifully crafted basins and sockets. The whole raised on a square section base with a quadripod base animated within ornamental motifs with a particularly detailed design of Cherub heads. Parisian creation from the Napoleon III period in the tradition of 18th century Mounted Objects, Circa 1860-1870. -----------------
An original creation in the vein of "18th century mounted objects
Originality and sophistication distinguish this very elegant pair of ornamental vases mounted as candelabras whose velvety glaze brightened with patterns in soft tones enhanced with gold, the sought-after and detailed composition as well as the airy silhouette with Louis XVI finery will catch the attention of the lover of highly decorative art furnishing objects.
Encircled by a caressing olive green celadon* background, an ovoid-shaped porcelain vase constitutes the body of each candelabra. Arranged on the glaze, almond green leafy acanthus scrolls with gold-enhanced lines undulate on their belly. Stylized florets, strings of pearls jeweled with small ivory pink cabochons give charm and preciousness to the porcelain piece set in a gilded bronze mount in Louis XVI finery.
Of great formal refinement, the latter finely chiseled with fine acanthus leaves with elegant scrolls studded with grained rosettes, tall stems with buds encircle the vase, graft themselves onto its sides, highlighting its harmonious curve. From their neck encircled by an openwork ring hemmed with a pearl flourish 'in arabesque" symmetrically ordered around a raised central shaft forming a torch four leafy light arms with basins, sockets and bobeches with ornamental motifs (lanceolate leaves, stylized acanthus oves and palmettes, corolla petals) beautifully worked.
Resting on a quadripod base, an openwork base of square section with a more voluble decorative part animated by exquisite Cherub heads haloing a cartridge with cut leather establishes the composition of these Vases-Candelabra intended to garnish stands, fireplace mantels, furniture pieces adorning the opulent interiors of the second half of the 19th century.
The happy success of this pair of Vases forming Candelabra lies in the attractive play established between the chosen materials (porcelain with Celadon base / gilded bronze ), their carefully crafted ornamentation and the gentle eurythmy of their silhouette.
Probably offered by one of the Parisian Art Furnishing Establishments, it illustrates the know-how, the inventiveness and even the promptness of the Bronze Manufacturers of the capital to postpone the "elitist" inclinations of a clientele conquered as in the previous century by the luster of porcelain pieces mounted on bronze.
With a model that is both original and flattering, our Pair of Vases-Lighting will constitute a judiciously chosen decorative piece within an elegant interior.
-----------------
* Céladon: Originally associated with the color of the ribbons adorning the theatrical costume worn by the tender Shepherd Céladon, hero of Honoré d'Urfé's (?1567-1825) Pastoral Fable L'Astrée (1607-1627), this typically French name came, by extension, to designate a piece of porcelain or stoneware imported from the Far East, most often from China with a green glaze in tones varying from almond green to olive green. The vogue during the 18th century of "Chinoiseries" made them sought-after objects, coveted by the great figures of the European Courts, Art Lovers and collectors. At their request, the Merchants-Mercers of the time solicited renowned bronze makers to add a gilded bronze mount to them, magnifying their shapes and their soft tones. This tradition of so-called "Mounted" Objects persisted in the 19th century and many Parisian Manufacturers of Art Furnishing Bronzes added to their specialties - as it appears in the Sales Catalogues of their Funds - gilded bronze mounts for vases, cups, etc. in a style adapted to the tastes of their customers.
