Henri Rivière, born in 1864 in Paris, died in 1951 in Sucy-en-Brie, is a French painter, engraver and illustrator. Artistic director of the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret from 1886 to 1897, he particularly distinguished himself as a director, scenographer and set designer. From 1882, he devoted himself to printmaking and successively practiced etching, woodcut and lithography. He participated in the success of the original print, the revival of xylography and the development of color prints. Through his style and technical experiments, he is one of the major figures of Japonism. His favorite subjects are Brittany and Paris.
