Charrière - Urology And Amputation - 1840-50

CHARRIÈRE (Frédéric). Amputation and urology box, Paris, circa 1840-1850. Steel, ebony, brass, fabric, wood and velvet; box: 49x15.5x10.5cm. Amputation box signed “Charrière à Paris”, decorated with its label “9 rue de l'école de médecine Paris” and bearing the words, on an engraved plaque affixed to the top of the lid: “De Lafaye. Amputation”. On the right side, a paper label bears the inscription “Trousse d'autops[ie]”. This box can be dated from the 1840s to the end of the 1850s, when Frédéric Charrière worked alone or in association with his son Jules. We have not found any interesting information on a surgeon named “De Lafaye”. Beautiful, very complete amputation and urology box including: - upper tray: a small saw (unsigned), seven amputation knives (one of which bears the mark of Vitry frères), two gouges or flat scissors. - lower tray: the large continuous pressure tourniquet by Charrière, a handle, a lead mallet, a large incisor pliers, a simple lithotome by Frère Côme modified by Charrière (signed by Mathieu) and a double lithotome by Dupuytren modified by Charrière. - tray contained in the lid: a large saw with two adjustment wheels, two curved needles, two large scalpels, a lag screw or ball screw, a large strong clamp for grasping and sawing bones, and a pair of scissors (which is the only replacement). Beautiful box, of unusual composition, combining amputation and urology.
