How much is missing in the atmosphere of openings and local artistic events the long silhouette of Tony FRITZ-VILARS and his inseparable pipe. And yet although loyal in friendship and often surprisingly courteous, he was not easy to satisfy and convince this phenomenon. First, a die-hard art critic, he had the knack of alienating an infinite number of talented painters whose style did not suit him, him, the maverick of an avant-garde painting, resolutely audacious and full of research. But certainly, TFV was above all an excellent draftsman sensitive to the Rouen picturesque that his canvases, on both sides, dismantled with enviable verve and intelligence. Everything fascinated him, touched his keen sense of observation, from metallurgical scraps to his little knitted drawings through which he forgot his troubles and his absence from an artistic life that he cultivated and yet must have missed in his apartment-studio perched high up in the Docks district.
