"Charles-hyppolite Cassas : "rest During The Flight Into Egypt""
Charles-Hippolyte Cassas (1800- ?): "Halt during the flight into Egypt", oil on paper mounted on panel in an arc-shaped format measuring 36 cm high by 50 cm base, signed and dated 1850, mounted in a 44 X 57 cm beaded frame to be glued back at the top. Born in Paris where he entered the Beaux-Arts at just 14 years old as a student of Gros, we learn from Bénézit… A regular exhibitor at the Salon, we know that he made the "Journey to Italy" essential to the training of young artists and brought back works from Rome, Nenni, etc… Our painting, despite its Christian subject and a situation in Egypt suggested by a vague pyramid in the background, is visibly linked to this stay as evidenced by the outfit of the Virgin which is very "Roman". This painting, full of maternal tenderness, with the Child tenderly hugging his Mother's neck, and Joseph arriving in the background, luggage on his head and leaning on a long cane, could be a simple family scene.
