"Head Of A Gupta Deity, Terracotta, India, 4th-6th Century"
Head of a Gupta deity circa 6th century AD in terracotta. Sloping face with an enigmatic smile, this sculpture is adorned with a headband around the head and a bun ball above the forehead. The Guptas are a dynasty that reigned over northern India from the end of the 3rd century to around the middle of the 6th century. Their origin remains mysterious and it is likely that they were first a clan of kinglets at the head of small states in the Ganges valley and its tributaries. The Gupta period is rightly regarded as the "golden age" of Indian culture. Brahmanism - the traditional religion of Hindus, derived from Vedism - and Buddhism coexisted harmoniously at the time.
